I don’t play golf (the chip on my shoulder affects my swing) and I don’t care who wins, I am worried and the commerce of it all, the rip off prices and the media rights surrounding it. basically if you need a case study for corporate influence in sport this is it. And its in our back yard, so how does one get to keep up with the action.
So its all set to start. RTE TV are ready to televise the Ryder Cup (highlights package) at 18:00 hours friday. This is because the Ryder Cup in not a prescribed sport by the Irish Minister for communications, allowing ireland to gift this event to the BSkyB who had a commercial deal in place with the organisers. RTE didn’t object too much and got a preferential radio coverage deal. RTE radio will broadcast the golf from 7.40am to 6.30pm on AM & LW with FM (opt ins) but not the internet or satellite (unless the 13E feed gets it?) as they do not have the rights to those mediums. Alternative programming will be available on the Internet and Satellite. [The team is Peter Lawrie, Damien McGrane, Gary Murphy and Stephen Browne & from RTE Greg Allen, Con Murphy, Des Cahill and Darragh Maloney with outside radio talent of Wayne Riley and Dougie Donnelly, RTE ace golfer Shane O’Donoghue will be commentating for RTÉ Television he might even be heard on the wireless or even the BBC! but now Im guessing.]
BBC Radio Five Live has coverage from 09:00 – 19:00 Nicky Campbell and John Inverdale present live commentary from the opening day of the Ryder Cup from the K Club, Dublin (they mean Kublin thats what the ‘K’ stands for). Europe are going for a record 3rd straight win, but will America be able to snatch their first win since 1999? Iain Carter and three-time Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher lead the commentary team. Stand by for lots of whispering to putting.
BBC 2 TV (Liniker) has a two hour package of highlights at 20:30 – 22:30hours on ‘free’ terrestrial & satellite both digital.
Sky Sports has the show here for €7.50 for the 3 days. SkySports TV schedule unavailabe.
