Now, after 42 years, the world’s longest running weekly music programme is coming off our screens. At its peak it was a must-see pulling in 15m viewers, but BBC bosses reckon the show’s been left behind by the internet and round-the-clock music channels.

A new Jupiter report ‘Music and Community: Low Cost, Authentic Promotion,’ finds that 53 % of consumers discover music through videos and 87 % through radio. But word-of-mouth is the most powerful way to expose and influence musical tastes. So it stands to reason that sites incorporating community features and functions can become influential music marketing platforms. Certainly the folks at MySpace have figured this out.
