Mother’s Day Proclamation<\/a><\/p>\n

Arise then…women of this day!<\/dd>\n
Arise, all women who have hearts!<\/dd>\n
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!<\/dd>\n
Say firmly:<\/dd>\n
“We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,<\/dd>\n
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,<\/dd>\n
For caresses and applause.<\/dd>\n
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn<\/dd>\n
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.<\/dd>\n
We, the women of one country,<\/dd>\n
Will be too tender of those of another country<\/dd>\n
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”<\/dd>\n
From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with<\/dd>\n
Our own. It says: “Disarm! Disarm!<\/dd>\n
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.”<\/dd>\n
Blood does not wipe out dishonor,<\/dd>\n
Nor violence indicate possession.<\/dd>\n
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil<\/dd>\n
At the summons of war,<\/dd>\n
Let women now leave all that may be left of home<\/dd>\n
For a great and earnest day of counsel.<\/dd>\n
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.<\/dd>\n
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means<\/dd>\n
Whereby the great human family can live in peace…<\/dd>\n
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,<\/dd>\n
But of God –<\/dd>\n
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask<\/dd>\n
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,<\/dd>\n
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient<\/dd>\n
And the earliest period consistent with its objects,<\/dd>\n
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,<\/dd>\n
The amicable settlement of international questions,<\/dd>\n
The great and general interests of peace.”<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n
