My Boy Lollipop” was doubly significant in British<\/a> music. It was the first major hit for Island Records<\/a> (although it was actually released via Fontana Records<\/a> because Blackwell did not want to overextend Island’s then-meager resources), and Small was the first artist to have a hit that was recorded in the so-called “bluebeat<\/a>” style. This was a “music genre<\/a>” that had recently emerged from Jamaica, and which, as with ska<\/a>, was the direct ancestor of reggae<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I have a vivid memory of this being on constant sale in the ’80’s on the island label in our record shops..<\/p>\n

The Spice Girls covered it… Legend has it that Rod Stewart<\/a> played harmonica<\/a> on it<\/p>\n
